So, OK, third cup of coffee kicking in, the buzz of DefCon’s hardware hacking village still reverberating in my ears — good time to tackle something that’s been weighing on my morbid mind for sometime: deepfake phishing emails. Yup, that’s right — those unbelievable scams in which cybercriminals use AI to pretend to be your trusted contacts. Mind-blowing, and to be honest, somewhat frightening.

What is Deepfake Phishing?

Before rolling your eyes and thinking, Oh not another fancy buzzword, hear me out. Deepfake phishing is also relatively new and just plain nuts as an evolution on old school phishing attacks. You know the drill — fake emails made to look like your boss or a vendor seeking sensitive information or unexpected wire transfers. But now, attackers are stepping it up by using AI-powered deepfake tech to sound — and sometimes look — exactly like the person they’re impersonating.

My career in this industry started in 1993, as a network admin, working with the likes of PSTN voice mux, and nah, the world-known Slammer worm to be exact. A decade ago, phishing was largely just low-down emails with poor spelling. Now? Cybercriminals rely on machine-learning algorithms that can mimic writing styles, speech patterns — even the voice of your CEO. This is phishing, but with steroids.

One last incident that made me spit my coffee. They then synthesized speech and text to fashion emails that would clear the sniff test.

This isn’t sci-fi anymore; it’s happening now, here. And it’s not just for big execs. Middle managers, heads of finance, HR — anybody you have at least a passing trust in within your organization can be mimicked.

Tips For Identifying It And Preventing Fraud

Well, before you freak out, here’s it is what I always tell you: aware and aware, tech goes hand in hand. It’s easy to blame users — I’ve been guilty of it — but we need better systems.
